Born in Dominion City, Bill Johnston has been very active in hockey over the years and has served as Vice-President of the MAHA and President of the MJHL. He was a founding member of the Greater Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association and was named a life member of its advisory board. He was also involved in the formation of the WHA Winnipeg Jets and as a Trustee of the Manitoba Hockey Foundation Inc.
