In 1946 he played for the Winnipeg Monarchs. Johnson was claimed by the Montreal Canadiens in 1947 and played one season with the Montreal Royals and the next two campaigns with the Buffalo Bisons of the AHL. Johnson finally made the NHL with Montreal in 1950 and the defenceman played the next 14 years with the Canadiens and won six Stanley Cups. He enjoyed his best season in 1958-59 when he won the Norris Trophy and was named to the NHL First All-Star Team.
