Born in Brandon, he was a goaltender who played his minor hockey in his hometown. He moved to the Winnipeg Monarchs for his final season of junior. Broda joined the International League champion Detroit Olympics in 1934-35 and shortly after was sold to the Toronto Maple Leafs. His NHL career spanned 16 seasons with two years of duty with the Canadian Armed Forces in World War II. He won the Vezina Trophy three times, recorded 62 shutouts and was selected on three NHL All-Star Teams. Broda was a clutch performer in the playoffs earning 13 shutouts in 101 games with a 1.99 GAA. He also played on five Stanley Cup winners.
