Born in Winnipeg. He was one of the greatest goaltenders in hockey history. He played his minor hockey in Winnipeg and spent one season with the 1945-46 Winnipeg Rangers junior team. He joined the Windsor juniors in 1946 -47. During the next four seasons he became the first player to win the rookie award in three pro leagues; the USHL in 1948, the AHL in 1949 and the NHL in 1951. In his NHL career Sawchuk appeared in 971 games, had a 2.52 GAA and registered an NHL record 103 shutouts. He played on three Stanley Cup winners with Detroit and another with Toronto and won the Vezina Trophy four times. He was selected to seven NHL All-Star Teams.
