Born in Winnipeg, he enjoyed a long and illustrious career in hockey, as a player, and coach in the amateur ranks. Jack played with juvenile championship teams in 1906, 1907 and 1908 when the St. Johns' College team won the University League. He was a member of the University of Manitoba team that won the 1910 Winnipeg Senior League. Ruttan played for the Winnipegs in 1913, the year they won the Allan Cup. Jack Ruttan remained in hockey as a coach for many years after his playing days.
