Born in Winnipeg, he was a great amateur centreman in the early days of hockey. He played with the 1913 Winnipegs when they won the Allan Cup and appeared in another 4 Allan Cup finals. In total he participated in 12 Allan Cups as either a player, coach or referee. He led the Manitoba Senior League in scoring twice. He coached two Allan Cup winners teams, the 1928 University of Manitoba and the 1931 Winnipegs and in 1932 he piloted the Winnipegs to the Olympic title. In 1931 Jack Hughes also coached the Memorial Cup champion Elmwood Millionaires. He was also a long time referee.
