Born in Winnipeg, he played for the St. James and Winnipeg Canadians of the MJHL in 1947 and 1948. He played his last junior season with the Barrie Flyers before turning pro with AHL Buffalo in 1949-50 and played seven seasons with the Bisons before retiring. He was one of nine Manitoba players to appear in the first AHL All-Star game on October 27, 1954. Gord Pennell began his coaching career in 1959 with MJHL Winnipeg Rangers and in 1961 led his club to the Western Canada final and the Charlie Gardiner Memorial Trophy in 1967. He coached the WHL Winnipeg Clubs in 1969-70 and another seven seasons in Winnipeg minor before retiring in 1982.
