Gardiner played junior with the Winnipeg Tammany Tigers in 1922 and in 1923 with the senior Selkirk Fishermen. He played two seasons in the American Hockey Association with the Winnipeg Maroons. In 1927 he joined the Chicago Blackhawks and in seven seasons he played 315 games, allowed only 673 goals for a 2.13 GAA and had 42 shutouts. He also played in 21 Stanley Cup play off games recording 5 shutouts and a phenomenal 1.66 GAA. He was with the Blackhawks when they won the Stanley Cup in 1934. Gardiner won the Vezina Trophy twice.
