Born in Selkirk, he was an outstanding defenceman throughout his career. Simpson had speed to burn which earned him the nickname Bullet Joe. In 1914-15 he played with the Winnipeg Victorias and in 1916 joined the Winnipeg 61st Battalion, the Allan Cup champions. He served with the 43rd Cameron Highlanders and was wounded twice in battle and he won the Military Medal. After World War I, he played with the Selkirk Fishermen in 1919/20. He joined the Edmonton Eskimos in 1921-22. Simpson joined the New York Americans of the NHL in 1925-26. He remained with them until 1931 as a player, then managed the New York club from 1932-1935.
