Born in Grenfell, Saskatchewan, he played all of his minor hockey in Poplar Point, Manitoba. He played on the 1929-30 Manitoba Juvenile championship team. He played junior with the 1932 Winnipeg Monarchs and in 1933 he played with Portage winning the MJHL scoring title that year. In 1934 he turned pro with the Vancouver Lions of the WHL and was with them when they won the league championship in 1936. Bryan entered the NHL in 1937 with the New York Rangers and scored the Stanley Cup winning goal in overtime in 1940. This right winger was the NHL scoring champion in 1942 and was selected to the NHL All-Star Team five times. In 2000, he was voted to Manitoba's All-Century Second All-Star Team.
