Born in Winnipeg, he played his minor hockey in Winnipeg with the Pilgrim club and left the city in 1927 after one season of junior. He became a pro in 1929 with Philadelphia and entered the NHL with Chicago in 1931-32. He helped Chicago win the 1934 Stanley Cup. He made the Second NHL All-Star Team in 1935, but in mid-season the following year he was traded to the New York Rangers. Coulter was selected to the Second All-Star Team three more times and captained the Rangers to their 1940 Stanley Cup victory. After two more seasons, Art entered the Canadian Armed Forces in World War II; this ended his pro career.
