Born in Winnipeg, Hatskin played junior hockey in Winnipeg with the 1936 Kildonan Stars and professional football with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Ben Hatskin was the founder of the Winnipeg Jets and a driving force behind the realization of the World Hockey Association in 1972, when he signed Bobby Hull away from the NHL's Chicago Black Hawks at Portage & Main.
