Born in Winnipeg, this centreman played junior with the St. Boniface Seals when they won the Memorial Cup in 1938. He was with Quebec when they won the Allan Cup in 1944 and was with the Montreal Canadiens when they won the Stanley Cup in 1946 and 1953. After 10 years in the NHL Reay got into coaching and won the 1963 AHL title with the Buffalo Bisons. In 16 NHL seasons as a coach he won 542 games which ranked him fourth in victories on the all-time list. He retired from coaching in 1977 with Chicago. In 2000, he was selected Manitoba's All-Century Second Team Coach.
