1900/01 WINNIPEG VICTORIAS

1901 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS
In 1901, a younger, tougher, and battle-tested team, with new talent joining the fold prepared for another Stanley Cup challenge. Among the new faces were Burke Wood, a former Montreal Shamrock winger, and a now-healthy Tony Gingras, hungry for redemption after the fiasco of their 1899 series against Montreal AAA. Dan Bain was back as captain, and the defense was bolstered by Rod and Magnus Flett, who added both physicality and finesse.
Their persistence finally paid off in 1901 in a rematch against the Montreal Shamrocks. The Victorias opened the series with a 4-3 victory. Gingras and Bain each scored, and Wood added two more goals against his former team. The second game ended in a 1-1 tie after regulation. In the extra period, Bain took the puck on a rush, skated the length of the ice, and scored the first overtime goal in Stanley Cup history.
As the puck crossed the line, half the arena sat stunned. The other half -- largely Western fans -- erupted in cheers and spilled onto the ice, as the Cup was heading back to Winnipeg.
The roster was: Art Brown(goal), Rod Flett(point), Jack Marshall(point), Magnus Flett(coverpoint), Burke Wood(rover), Dan Bain(center -Captain), Fred Cadham(center), Charles Johnstone(left wing), Tony Gingras(right wing), Jack Armytage (President), George A. Carruthers (Vice President), Mark Hooper (Trainer), Ted Robinson (Sectary-treasurer), Walter Pratt (Director).
