Date of Birth: 1966-03-11Date of Induction: 2026-10-03
After a brief stint with his hometown Flin Flon Bombers, Baumgartner moved to the 1983/84 Western Hockey League’s Prince Albert Raiders. There, Baumgartner developed into a tough, dependable defenceman, earning WHL All-Scholastic Team honours in 1984 and capturing a Memorial Cup championship in 1985.
Selected in the 12th round (250th overall) of the 1985 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, Baumgartner never suited up for the club, as his rights were traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1986. After finishing his junior career, Baumgartner spent a season in Switzerland with EHC Chur, in a league where he was forced to refine his overall play, adding discipline and versatility to his physical style.
He made his NHL debut with the Kings on January 4, 1988, immediately establishing his presence with 19 penalty minutes in his first game. Originally a defenceman, Baumgartner transitioned to left wing in the NHL, carving out a role as one of the league’s most recognized enforcers.
Traded to the New York Islanders in 1989, his aggressive play was key in the Isles climbing from last to first place in the Patrick Division.
Over a 12-year NHL career, Baumgartner played 696 games for the Kings, New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and Boston Bruins, recording 2,242 penalty minutes.
Off the ice, he balanced hockey with academics, earning a business and finance degree from Hofstra University, serving as NHLPA Vice President, and later completing an MBA at Harvard. His career reflects both toughness and a commitment to growth beyond the game.
