Born in Poplar Point, Addie Bell began his playing career with the Poplar Point Intermediate champions in 1921. Later he moved to Portage la Prairie where he played senior hockey. He was responsible for the formation of the Southside Club. The highlight of his long and illustrious coaching career came in 1942 when the Portage Terriers won the Memorial Cup. Two of Addie Bell's sons, Gord and Joe, were on that championship team.
