Born in Winnipeg, this defenceman played with the 1949 Brandon Wheat Kings who lost to the Montreal Royals in the only eight-game Memorial Cup final ever played. He went on to pro hockey and in the 1953 AHL final Chrystal scored the cup-winning goal, in overtime, to give the Cleveland Barons the Calder Cup. He spent two seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers. He was Captain of the WHL champion Brandon Regals in 1957, and was twice named as the league's top defenceman and to the First All-Star team.
